I understand the most conventional practice is to do a year in review post in December that covers the previous 11 months of activity. However, in an effort to change the stereotype that Okies are procrastinators and have a blatant disrespect for the concept of time, our year in review post is coming 9 months early. Some may see this as a bold move, well that’s probably because it is. That being said, here’s a look at the Okies in 2011.

New Pledge Class: The New class is comprised of 12 freshman, most of which are tall or very athletic, all of which demonstrate the faith and absurdity that defines the brothers of Omicron Xi. The new pledge class has provided a lot of excitement within the fraternity. “Seeing those guys put on colors for the first time after signing their bids was awesome” said John Gourley, “I see these guys playing a unique role in the fraternity for years to come, or at least the next three.”

Formal: Formal proved to be a wonderful time of rhythmic movement and absurd antics. After consuming a delicious dinner, the men took to the dance floor where they could be seen “doin’ it like Bernie”.  Other highlights of the evening included Rage, an unexpected playing of the Power Song, a live performance by aspiring rapper Andy Dovan, and entertaining pictures with the infamous Evans paddle. The superlative portion of the night was headlined by Kellen Quackenbush and Kara Wilson taking home the award for couple with the most flow, while Kirk Gagliardo won the award for person most likely to make-out after formal. In completely unrelated news somebody recently left the club. Just saying. Afterwards most people headed to Sandy Lake for a time of games and fellowship.

Service Project: Early Saturday morning on February 12, the fraternity headed to Pine Valley Bible Camp for a day of service. Pine Valley, which ministers to inner city youth, has been a place of employment for several Okies in the past and holds special meaning for current members Jordan Gallo, and John Dellape, as well as alumni like Dom Versace and Kevin Kaye. The event organized by Evan Saenger, was a great opportunity to help out an incredible organization and build relationships with members of the new class. “As a fraternity we want to be known as a group that demonstrates God’s love through service and this was a great opportunity to act on that desire” , said Jake Wassenar.

For those of you who aren’t aware of one of the newer events the Okies throw, Okiepalooza is one of the highlights of our semester. Each room on the hall comes up with a theme and creates an activity for visitors to participate in. At the end of the night is an Apple Bobbing relay where 150+ people line the halls and watch teams of four participate in apple bobbing relays.
